Senior Recognition Award criteria adopted; commission creates planning committee for May event

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Senior Citizen Advisory Commission on Jan. 23 approved a set of scoring criteria for this year’s Senior Recognition Awards and appointed a three-member committee to work with Parks and Recreation on planning Senior Recognition Day and the connected Fairbanks 50+ event.
The scoring framework adopted covers sustained commitment to healthy aging, leadership or involvement that advances Age Friendly Fairbanks domains, and impact on others through advocacy, education or program development. Commissioners also confirmed award categories used in previous years: Lifetime Fitness, Outstanding Caregiver, Outstanding Volunteer and Model of Health.
Commissioners said the criteria were created to make evaluation less subjective and to clarify eligibility rules. The commission discussed ethics rules for nominations and agreed commissioners may not vote on nominations for immediate family or on themselves; nominees must wait 10 years to win the same award again. If more than five nominations appear in a category, a three-member work group will score entries and bring recommendations back to the full commission.
Brian Charlton, Parks and Recreation, said nomination forms are available online and in hard copy and that Parks and Rec will share the forms through its newsletter and social media. The commission agreed to help promote the nomination period.
To manage logistics for the May events the commission appointed a three-person special committee to work directly with Parks and Recreation staff on menu, MC and performer choices, plaques, setup/takedown, and other event details. Commissioners Denise D'aniello (chair), Carol (commission member) and Larry Duffy volunteered to serve on the planning committee; others may assist on an informal basis.
The commission voted to adopt the award criteria by roll call, recorded as 5-0 in favor. No amendments to the criteria were made at the meeting.
The commission asked Parks and Recreation to provide periodic updates and to bring matters requiring formal approval back to the full commission prior to final decisions.
Ending: Parks and Recreation will finalize logistical details with the committee and publish nomination instructions; the commission’s next regular meeting is scheduled for April 10, 2025.
