Fairbanks North Star Borough staff launches 20-year comprehensive plan update, seeks public input

Planning staff told the Fairbanks North Star Borough Planning Board on Wednesday that the borough has begun a 20‑year update to its comprehensive plan and is seeking public input through a survey and a series of community open houses.
"This plan is kind of our biggest and arguably most important plan. It's required in state statute. It's required to be updated every 20 years," planning staff member George Stephan said, and urged residents to take the online survey and attend outreach events.
Stephan said the project is in the "infancy stages" and the borough has created a web page and printed flyers with a QR code linking to fandsb.gov/compplan. He said the borough will begin the outreach with a public survey and is scheduling community open houses in several locations the last week of the month to gather initial input.
Stephan also reviewed upcoming meeting schedules, saying there is a "significant chance" the Planning Board’s Feb. 19 meeting will be canceled because no items had been scheduled by the packet deadline; he said the March 19 meeting currently shows a potential five items, including two road‑naming files.
The announcement framed the update as primarily a policy document and described the outreach as initial information gathering rather than a final plan. Stephan said more details would be posted on the project web page and noted George Stephan as the staff contact for questions.
Board members did not take action on the update schedule at the meeting; Stephan asked the public to distribute the survey link and attend the open houses when dates and locations are posted on the project page.
