Navajo County honors K-9 Kilo after years of drug interdiction work

Danny Dietz of the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office presented a retirement recognition for K-9 Kilo at Monday’s board meeting, summarizing the canine’s interdiction work and stating that veterinarians recommended retirement for medical reasons.
"Kilo will be retired, and be turned over to the care of Deputy Ostertag," Dietz said. He told the board Kilo began his career with the Hulbert Police Department in early 2020 and joined Navajo County after deputies observed the dog's potential.
Dietz listed law-enforcement seizures credited to Kilo over about four-and-a-half years: 29 pounds of cocaine, 718,000 fentanyl pills, 6.8 pounds of heroin, 25 pounds of marijuana and 481 pounds of methamphetamine. He also said Kilo and the sheriff’s office were recognized by the Arizona Narcotics Officers Association; the sheriff’s office presented cards from that association to board members.
Supervisors praised Kilo and the sheriff’s office for their role in interdiction and community outreach. No formal vote or policy action accompanied the presentation; the item was an acknowledgement and retirement of the canine from active service.
