The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly on April 10 adopted an ordinance appropriating $720,000 from the Solid Waste Enterprise operating fund to buy a track-type landfill bulldozer, citing equipment age, daily operational need and lead time for new deliveries.
Craig Jordan of the Solid Waste Division presented the staff report and said the division needed to replace an existing machine that has high service hours. "This machine is essential to landfill operation and used daily for multiple tasks. It is important to initiate this purchase now due to the dozer's current hours and extended lead time on delivery of new equipment," Jordan said. He added the borough will sell the current machine and return proceeds to the enterprise fund and that the purchase includes a five-year/8,000-hour warranty.
Assembly debate was brief; members said they understood the operational need. The assembly voted by roll call and the ordinance passed 9-0.
