County finance staff flag dip in half-cent sales tax, report $474,000 state-shared receipts for December

County finance staff updated the Board of Supervisors on two revenue streams that underpin the general fund as the county prepares its next budget.

"For the month of December, we received $474,000," Rene, the county finance presenter, said, referring to state-shared sales tax receipts. Rene said the county had budgeted $5,500,000 for that revenue stream and that year-to-date figures currently show the county ahead by roughly $404,000, but cautioned that recent months do not yet show a reliable trend.

Rene also said the county's county-generated half-cent sales tax dropped to $111,000 for the month, the lowest point of the fiscal year so far; he said that figure put the county "$768 under our projected" amount (the transcript does not specify units beyond that phrasing). Finance staff said they will remain conservative in building the next budget while waiting for confirmation on other funding items such as the status of a school-related funding item and outstanding bill payments.

Board members asked clarifying questions about the two revenue streams; staff explained that state-shared sales tax is distributed by the state to counties and cities based on population and other formula factors, while the half-cent is the county's own sales tax returned directly to the county. Staff also noted that seasonal effects and holiday spending can produce month-to-month variability.
