The Lake County School Board on April 14 honored multiple student athletic achievements and heard an Education Foundation update on scholarships and program support.
Why it matters: The recognitions highlight student achievement across athletics and academics and the Education Foundation’s role in funding classroom resources and scholarships.
Athletic recognitions
Patrick Todd, presenting for the district, introduced the Tavares High School Unified Basketball Class 2A State Championship team and coaches. The team finished an undefeated season (7–0) and won the state championship 48–41 against Cypress, Todd said. Head coach Jordan Talmadge and assistant coaches Matthew Griffin and Michelle Matheny were recognized alongside student athletes called forward by name.
The board also recognized multiple weightlifting achievements, including state champions and record setters from Leesburg High School. The district noted a state Olympic lift total of 280 pounds for student Malaysia (reported by the presenter) and multiple state placings: state champions, state runner‑ups and several FHSA qualifiers. Coach Josh Boyer’s program achievements were noted, including multiple state championships and qualifiers over his tenure.
Education Foundation report
Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, reporting for the Education Foundation, said the foundation has awarded $106,162 in scholarships to 69 recipients and anticipates awarding seven more scholarships in the coming weeks. The foundation is engaging past teacher‑of‑the‑year winners for social media, classroom grants and volunteer review and has secured furniture donations from Westgate Resorts for distribution to schools via the district warehouse and grounds team. Upcoming foundation events and fundraisers — including a Take Stock in Children celebration April 22 and a sold‑out “Ladies for Education” fundraiser April 25 — were announced.
Other superintendent and trustee updates
The superintendent noted both credit rating agencies recently upgraded the district to an A+ rating, praised Scott Ward and the finance team, and announced the Fruitland Park Elementary School ribbon cutting. The board also recognized Carver Middle School students who placed in the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative state championship; one student placed fifth out of 63 competitors and their coach, Wendy Drake, was named coach of the year.
Ending: The board offered congratulations to athletes, coaches and foundation staff and encouraged continued community support for students and district programs.
