Preston council approves hiring of new police officer

The Preston City Council approved the hiring of Benny Gutierrez to the Preston Police Department after the chief reported the candidate's background check and testing were satisfactory.
"His background check came back all clear. He did very well in the written test, very well in the interviews," the police chief told the council, adding that Gutierrez is scheduled to start on the 16th. The chief said current field training officers are mentoring recruits under a 12-week Field Training Officer (FTO) program.
Councilman Chris Larson moved to approve the chief's hiring request; the motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote. The council indicated the new officer and other recent hires would be sworn in at a future meeting.
The chief told council members the department responded to 32 calls for service during January, issued 25 infractions and conducted 101 traffic stops. He said the department has mental-health training underway and that Officer Loveday is serving as the FTO for new officers.
