City awards $6.062 million bid for wastewater headworks expansion

The Rexburg City Council on Tuesday approved a low bid of $6,062,000 from Western Water Constructors to expand the headworks at the city's wastewater treatment plant.
Public Works Director Keith told the council the contract will roughly double the headworks capacity from about 6 million gallons per day to about 12 million gallons per day, a change the city described as necessary to avoid future plant overflows and regulatory penalties. The bid came in roughly $1 million above earlier engineer estimates.
Keith said two companies bid the job; Western Water Constructors submitted the low bid and staff recommended award. Councilmember Walker moved to approve the contract and Councilmember Eric Erickson seconded; the council approved the contract.
City staff said construction would begin soon after execution of the contract and required bonding and mobilization; the city expects work to start within weeks and to proceed through the construction season. The project is intended to increase plant capacity and to reduce the risk of permit violations from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality.
Council also approved city’s spring cleanup dates (April 7–28) during the same meeting.
