At the April 1 meeting the Coeur d'Alene City Council proclaimed April 25 as Fair Housing Month in the city and recognized national fair-housing law.
Mayor Woody McKevers read a proclamation noting the 1968 federal law that prohibits housing discrimination and asked residents to reaffirm commitments to fair housing. "Now, therefore, Woody McKevers, Mayor of the City Of Coeur D'Alene of Idaho, hereby proclaims April 25 as Fair Housing Month in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho," the proclamation read.
Jennifer Smock, who identified herself as president of the Coeur d'Alene Regional Realtors, told council that the local Realtor association requires periodic code-of-ethics and fair-housing training at the national, state and local levels, and that local members take fair-housing classes that are mandatory to maintain licenses in Idaho. She outlined community outreach projects the association supports: an annual "ramp-a-thon" to build wheelchair ramps for residents in need, a realtor golf tournament that raises funds for local nonprofits (the association raised about $10,000 last year for Safety Net and plans to donate to Family Promise this year), and support for local community initiatives.
Smock said the association has a board of grievances and a community outreach committee. Council thanked Smock and accepted the proclamation.
