District will use an existing professional learning day and built-in minutes to make up recent snow days

Staff told trustees how the district plans to recover instructional minutes lost to recent snow and campus closures.
The district’s current calendar already listed April 21 as a built-in bad-weather day. Staff said they will use that date as a regular student day to make up one missed day. They also said the district will add 15 minutes to an existing professional learning day on Friday, Feb. 14, to capture additional instructional minutes: as staff explained, “Next Friday, February 14 is already a professional learning day for staff... and so we are going to adjust that learning day by 15 minutes.”
Administrators noted that the state allows professional learning minutes to count toward instructional time; they said the district has already used one of its allowable waivers and that additional waivers to TEA require showing two missed days before applying. The superintendent said staff will monitor boil-water-notice campuses separately and communicate schedules to families in the district weekly message.
