Sheldon ISD updates trustees on bond-funded construction: ninth/tenth campus, roofing and Ag barn work underway

Sheldon ISD administrators briefed trustees on multiple bond-funded facilities projects and campus repairs during the April board workshop, reporting steady progress on the district’s ninth- and tenth-grade campus and a mix of near-term construction actions across campuses.

Construction and schedule: District staff said the slab for the main building is complete and walls are going up at the ninth- and tenth-grade campus. The district planned a “topping out” beam-signing ceremony for April 29 and reported the project is moving ahead faster than originally estimated. Administrators said the CTE (career and technical education) area is under construction and that some programs will remain at the high school while others will use the new campus.

HVAC and mechanical work: Garrett Elementary’s geothermal repairs were reported as mostly complete; staff said the fluid cooler is installed and operational and building-automation-system (BAS) programming is in progress. District leaders also described repairs to condensing units, rooftop units and other HVAC systems at multiple campuses.

Roofing, restrooms and fencing: The district reported completion of roofing projects 1 and 2 and said only King High School’s big roofing replacement (the “King Bridal” portion) remains. King Middle and other campuses will receive selected repairs or replacements. Knoll Middle School has localized roof fastener issues under warranty, and the district is coordinating repairs under contract.

Ag Barn and site work: District staff said the Ag Barn perimeter fencing has been replaced on three sides and that the south side (not owned by the district) will require coordination with a private pipe yard owner; staff reported progress on interior animal enclosures and site cleanup and said Phase 2 (gutters, roof and lighting) is planned.

Procurement developments: For King Middle roof replacement the district received zero bids when the project was posted. District staff said they identified an on-site contractor already working at the ninth- and tenth-grade campus (named Vogler in the workshop) who submitted a significantly under-budget bid; that award is scheduled as an action item at an upcoming regular board meeting.

Other facilities items: Staff reported completed projects including new elementary playgrounds, perimeter fencing, marquees at campuses, cafeteria equipment replacements and newly completed transportation/monument work. The Davis Center plan was discussed — staff noted the property lacks some historical permitting for a retention pond; the district is working through drainage, permits and annexation details before proceeding with reconstruction and adding parking and a planned community “spark park.”

Next steps and board items: Several projects will come to the board as action items or bids, including the Vogler roofing award, King High restroom renovations, and the BAS system procurement. Administrators flagged a set of May agenda items (restroom renovations, MDF/IDF split units, locker replacements and additional BAS work) and said staff will return with construction documents and RFP/RFQ materials as appropriate.

The workshop discussion was largely informational. Staff emphasized coordination with contractors on active sites, compliance with permits and ongoing efforts to preserve project budgets and schedules.
