Shorewood board accepts learning-environment monitoring report, flags timing and safety updates

At its Feb. 25 meeting, the Shorewood School Board voted to accept the district's OE‑8 monitoring report on the learning environment as compliant after administrators reviewed professional development, safety and student-support indicators.
The report, presented by district administrator Mike Joynt, covered work from the 2023–24 school year and identified areas for continuous improvement including an update to the district safety plan, more intentional adaptive and inclusive options in extracurricular and recreation programs, and alignment of indicators with the board's collaborative commitments to equity.
"Eliminating inequities requires us, to have continuous self reflection, growth, and action to hold ourselves and others accountable," Joynt told the board as he walked through slides that summarized professional development on gender‑inclusive classrooms, identity‑relevant teaching and trauma‑sensitive strategies and noted the district's curriculum review work from 2023–24.
Board members pressed administrators about the reporting period and whether the document's heavy reliance on 2023–24 data left the board with outdated information. One board member said the timing felt off and suggested examining whether the district's monitoring schedule should shift so reports capture a more current school year. Administrators confirmed the OE‑8 report is intentionally a lagging report and that placing it in February makes it difficult to include 2024–25 results without changing the calendar.
Administrators also recommended reconvening the district safety committee to update the district safety plan and said there are opportunities to expand adaptive and inclusive options across extracurriculars and clubs, after consulting with recreation and special education staff. The report called out use of multiple data sources, including district academic measures and student well‑being surveys, and described ongoing work to integrate equity commitments into school growth plans.
After discussion, the board took a formal vote to accept the OE‑8 monitoring report as compliant. The board directed staff to return with any proposed changes to the monitoring schedule and to report back on steps to reconvene the safety committee and expand inclusive extracurricular offerings.
Administrators said they will continue aligning OE indicators to the district's strategic priorities and will bring timeline proposals to the board for when and how monitoring reports are presented.
