During the superintendent's report the board heard several safety updates: the district has launched the Raptor visitor management system, will review its district safety plan later this spring with community participation, and plans to run tabletop emergency exercises with the Shorewood Police Department.
Dr. Burgos told the board the district shared guidance with staff and families about implementation and other state actions affecting schools, then briefed members on the Raptor visitor management launch: “We also launched this Monday the use of the Raptor visitor management system. And so we are asking visitors who will whose visits will extend beyond the school office to show a photo ID and sign in and sign out at the office. It's another layer of safety.”
In response to a board question, district staff explained Raptor performs a check of a valid photo ID, conducts a background check against the registered offender database and, if a match appears, the administrative assistant is notified so a principal can follow up. Staff stated that, “By statute, if someone is a registered *** offender, they need to share their plans or their desire to visit campus with us ahead of time,” and that contractors will also be required to sign in and display a badge while in student areas.
Board members asked whether Raptor changed door‑access controls and learned the current rollout covers visitor checks and printed visitor badges; staff said building door‑locking and automated fob scheduling are under discussion and will be addressed by a planned safety committee later in the spring. The superintendent said she would like to move toward programming exterior doors to open only during specific windows and lock outside those times, but that logistics across multiple buildings must be considered.
Ending: Board members asked about board badges and background checks for trustees; staff said arrangements for board credentials were possible and would be handled through the business office.
