Board tables OE‑1 monitoring report, asks administration to recalculate indicator

The Shorewood School District Board of Education tabled a monitoring report for the board’s global operating expectations (OE‑1) on Jan. 14 and asked administration to recalculate one indicator before returning the item on the consent agenda.

Board member Laurie presented the OE‑1 monitoring report and said the board was compliant with the first two indicators but not compliant with the third. Laurie noted that just 51.9% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the questioned indicator and questioned whether the survey sample and the indicator itself were the best measures of the policy standard.

Board members raised concerns about the small sample size for the parent/community perception portion of the survey and about whether “don’t know/does not apply” responses were included in the averages. Multiple members suggested the district should exclude those responses when calculating the indicator, or offer both with‑and‑without calculations to the board. One board member proposed tabling the report to allow administration to recalculate the metric and to return the OE‑1 monitoring item under the consent agenda.

A motion to table the OE‑1 monitoring report and request recalculation was made, seconded and approved. The board directed the administration to present recalculated results (excluding “don’t know/does not apply” responses) and to consider removing the indicator entirely from OE‑1 if it does not fit the board’s intent for that monitoring measure.

The administration said it will recalculate the indicator, provide both calculations (with and without don’t‑know responses) if useful, and return the item to the consent agenda for a future meeting.
