Parks manager updates: vets park dog pop-up closing April 20; pools, golf, Huron River Day, and demolition work ahead

Parks manager Josh updated the commission on operations and upcoming events as the department moves from winter into spring and summer.
He said the temporary pop-up dog park at Veterans Park is scheduled to close April 20 as planned; staff will review public feedback and usage data and report back to PAC in May or June. Staff also said they are evaluating a possible summer pop-up event and will share details with the commission as plans firm up.
Facilities and season openings: golf courses have already opened for the season and green fees will resume as scheduled; delivery sites and other facilities are scheduled to open April 26. Fuller Pool is slated to open in mid-May with additional pools on track for Memorial Day weekend. Parks staff reported extensive hiring and facility maintenance work underway as part of seasonal preparation.
Events and demolition: Huron River Day is scheduled for May 18 at Gallup Park from noon to 4 p.m.; organizers seek volunteers and expect nonprofit partners and performances. Parks staff also announced that demolition of the Veterans shelter and the farmers market office will begin in the coming weeks; the work is being done for safety reasons and will require temporary site changes.
Day camps and programming: Fuller and Bureau day camps have increased capacity in recent years; Fuller is anticipated to serve up to about 90 campers per week and Bureau about 60 per week. Staff said river camps and delivery programs face constraints tied to transportation and safety and have limited potential to grow capacity.
Commissioners asked about scholarships for camps and access; staff said a formal scholarship program is in development and will return to PAC later in 2025 for committee review.
