Board hears schematic-design update for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at Reedsburg High School

The Reedsburg School District board received a progress update on Phase 1 of the district’s facility project to convert parts of the IMC into a Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and renovate the commons and school store.
District staff and design partners presented a schematic design and the project schedule. The design team described a central “work lounge” framed by library stacks, flexible presentation space at the front of the IMC, conference and breakout rooms, a fabrication area with “dirty” and “clean” labs, a textiles and vinyl area, and a school store offering school-branded apparel and snacks.
The presentation emphasized flexibility, visibility for student work, acoustic and cleaning considerations, and inclusion of mobile furniture to reconfigure spaces for instruction and quiet study. Designers said about 200 student survey responses informed programming; students expressed interest in apparel design and print, business-management skills, computer-aided fabrication, comfortable seating and grab-and-go food in a school store.
Designers discussed circulation and possible public access: entrances on the south and north could allow community or MATC access to the innovation center while enabling the district to lock off the rest of the building. The team flagged storage needs and said the district’s safety staff would need to review egress and fire-code implications before making final changes to corridors. Skylights and increased natural light were listed as “wish-list” items dependent on the budget check.
Project schedule given to the board included delivery of the proposed schematic design to cost-estimating partners the week after the meeting, phase-1 budget check on Feb. 17, continuing phase-2 visioning meetings starting Jan. 29 and Feb. 5, and a planned board presentation in March for approval of a guaranteed maximum price that will set design and construction cost for Phase 1.
No formal board vote was taken on the schematic design at the meeting; staff said approvals and the guaranteed maximum price will return to the board for action in coming months.
