The Henry County Historical Society asked the fiscal court to help fund materials for a downtown mural planned for a wall facing Carter Alley and Newcastle Baptist Church.
A representative for the historical society described the project as a 32.5-foot-by-8-foot mural by local artist Greg Doc, intended to depict agricultural themes, churches, schools, the Kentucky River and people to "memorialize the rich history of Henry County." The society said the artist quoted $2,700 for the full project and asked the county to cover $300 for materials while the society would raise the balance.
Magistrates discussed placement, review of proposed images and whether the mural would be on county-owned property. A motion was made to approve county payment of $300 for materials contingent on approval of the final artwork before it is painted; that motion was seconded and carried.
One magistrate noted the court should see and approve the final drawing before installation. "We have to approve the drawing before it goes on the building," a magistrate said during the vote.
The motion passed with a majority voice vote; the transcript does not include a roll-call tally. The historical society said it hopes the mural will beautify the space and increase awareness of county history.
