God's Food Pantry updates Pulaski County Fiscal Court on Palm Beach renovation, funding needs

Brenda Russell of God’s Food Pantry updated the Pulaski County Fiscal Court during public comments on the group’s Palm Beach building renovation. She said the pantry won a $1 million U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant to remediate lead paint and asbestos and is out to bid for the work; the bid package closes next Monday, she said.
Russell said she also received unofficial notice — publicized by Gov. Beshear’s social media remarks — that the pantry would receive a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), with the City of Somerset serving as the pass-through agency because the property sits in city limits. Russell said the pantry has also been invited to submit a full application to the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).
Despite those awards and invitations, Russell said the building requires a new roof before the pantry can move; she estimated the roof replacement will cost about $500,000. The EPA award covers remediation of walls, windows and floors, she said, and Life Learning Center is slated as a partner to occupy space and provide education services. Russell asked the court and community to continue support and prayers as the group pursues remaining funding.
