VDOT update: Ferndale–River Road roundabout, roadside resurfacing and Halifax and Sterling truck restrictions

A VDOT representative updated the Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors on multiple transportation projects and maintenance activities during the March 18 meeting.
VDOT area maintenance representative Aaron French said work on the Ferndale and River Road roundabout is progressing through pre‑construction steps and is scheduled to advertise for construction in August; he said construction would likely begin late 2025 or early 2026 and will include full closures and detours. “There will be full full detours, full closures associated with that project, so we will work with plenty of public involvement ahead of time,” French said.
French reported several resurfacing and repair efforts for the residence, including: plant‑mix asphalt resurfacing expected to begin in April (contractor mobilization to be confirmed), a full‑depth reclamation on Route 651 (Mason’s Church Road) to address deep subgrade failures, and ongoing pothole and debris work following winter storms. He warned that some thin surface areas require a specialized spray injection truck shared with adjacent residencies and may take longer to address.
On traffic restrictions, French said a Halifax Road through‑truck restriction was approved and signs should be installed within one to two weeks after traffic‑engineering review; Sterling Road is awaiting similar approval and may be a month behind Halifax. He said the county will notify local and state law enforcement once restrictions and signs are in place to begin enforcement.
French also said forestry herbicide treatments were underway on sections of Route 1 and annual maintenance crews are preparing for multiple bridge and sidewalk projects, with a Bain Road bridge crew installing a prefabricated aluminum bridge structure expected to arrive in late April or early May.
