Residents press planning commission on closed-session authority and landfill impacts during public comment

During the public-comment period of the March 17 meeting, multiple residents questioned the planning commission's legal authority to hold closed sessions and raised operational concerns about a proposed landfill and associated truck traffic.

William Bruce, identifying himself as a resident of the fourth district, asked directly: "What legal authority does this board have?" He said the planning commission is an advisory body and that final actions go to the Board of Supervisors; he urged the commission to confirm its legal basis for closed sessions and for any actions it takes on conditional-use permits. Another commenter urged the commission to reconsider closed-session practice and to re-start public processes where appropriate.

Residents also raised traffic and safety concerns related to a landfill approach route across from a difficult intersection and warned about a projected 75 to 80 trucks per day using the road. A speaker noted existing heavy truck traffic and said additional daily truck trips would strain local roads.

Other public comments touched on historical-preservation questions (a resident said the historical registry status had been verified previously) and county loan and debt amounts raised in criticism of prior projects. Commissioners and staff acknowledged the concerns and said they would follow up on statutory limits on closed sessions and requests for clarification about process.
