Spencer County Fiscal Court on Feb. 3 adopted a resolution expressing opposition to proposals that would centralize the collection of local occupational and business license taxes at the state level.
Stephanie (last name not specified), speaking in her county role, presented the resolution and outlined concerns that the state has not detailed how it would collect and return locally generated funds. "We just know that there's a huge push to collect occupational taxes and net profit taxes at the state level," she said, adding that the proposal could leave local offices handling questions while the state retains a portion of collections.
The resolution cites KRS 67.75'67.79 as the statutory framework for local occupational fee authority and states the Fiscal Court's objection to centralized collection by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Court members said local administration is effective in Spencer County and that adopting the resolution would align the county with other counties making the same point to state legislators.
A motion to adopt the resolution was made and seconded; the Fiscal Court approved it by voice vote.
The resolution directs that, if adopted, it will be signed during open session and sent to state lawmakers to communicate the court's position.
