Maverick County Commissioners briefly debated a resolution on April 9 to support a bill authorizing a county hotel-occupancy tax, then moved the item into executive session to get legal clarification on the tax's scope and destination of revenue.
The resolution before the court would authorize Maverick County to impose a hotel-occupancy tax on all hotels located within the county; commissioners and staff discussed whether prior versions of a similar proposal were limited to revenues directed to the Maverick County Airport. County staff said past efforts had targeted a specific casino hotel and an unverified tribal facility, and that there had not been a formal countywide collection mechanism established previously.
The judge said the county attorney should review the draft and confirm whether the house bill language โ as presented โ would require the tax revenue to be earmarked for the airport or permit broader county uses. "Can we just get some clarification on that?" the judge asked, and the court voted to move the item into executive session for attorney consultation under Texas Government Code section 551.071.
Commissioners unanimously approved sending the item to executive session. The court did not adopt the resolution during open session; further action will follow after legal review and clarification on whether the bill would create a countywide hotel-occupancy tax or restrict revenue to a particular use.
