Williams County DMV reports steady transactions, increased passport applications and upcoming DOT review

Micah Lindsey, who manages the Williams County DMV under contract with the North Dakota Department of Transportation, briefed commissioners on office operations, customer service improvements and upcoming compliance work.
Lindsey said the office handles about 2,500 transactions per month including titles, placards and passports. The DMV now performs passport acceptance services under contract with the U.S. Department of State, and staff said passport volume has roughly doubled since 2022. Lindsey said the office achieved the DOT’s accuracy threshold that permits local title printing and has maintained passing grades on state reviews for multiple years.
The DMV team has implemented procedural changes—mail and dealer tracking, drop-off/pickup systems for dealers, and expanded staff cross-training—and Lindsey credited local dealers and staff for increased dealer business and improved customer flow. He said Mondays and Tuesdays are the busiest days and that about 84–85 percent of business is by walk-in or appointment.
Lindsey said the DOT will conduct a site visit on May 10 as part of periodic oversight; the county’s DOT contract is due for renewal in June (a three-year contract is anticipated). Commissioners thanked Lindsey and staff for improved customer service and timely processing.
