The Commissioners Court approved a six-month contract with Securus to continue inmate telephone service, video visits and inmate mail services while the county finalizes longer-term arrangements.
Court staff said the vendor requested a six-month agreement to reflect new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules that have reduced inmate-calling rates. A corrections lieutenant was on hand to answer questions about the new procedures and costs. The lieutenant explained the vendor "reduced their rates considerably" under the new rules and that the contract will run through the county fiscal year (to the end of September), allowing the county to re-evaluate options during the next budget cycle.
Commissioners noted the jail had been operating month-to-month since the FCC changes and that the county attorney had given the contract a preliminary review. The court voted to authorize the county judge to sign the six-month Securus agreement.
