Treasurer reports $38.4 million distributed in January and tax-notice activity

Nancy, the county treasurer, presented the office—s quarterly report, detailing distributions, refund activity and delinquent-tax enforcement steps.

Treasurer—s report

- In January the treasurer—s office distributed $38,399,002.69 to entities that receive county tax dollars. - Neighborhood revitalization program rebates of $142,009.35 were processed for taxpayers who paid in full by the December deadline; additional rebates tied to May payments will be mailed no later than early July. - On Feb. 20 the office mailed 1,762 delinquent-tax notices covering unpaid personal property, oil and gas, watercraft and heavy-truck taxes; subsequent sheriff warrants issued March 11 totaled $287,003.26. - The office processed 513 abatements totaling $1,001.33 and charged a $4,400 correction fee to a software vendor after a township certified incorrect mill levies that led to taxpayer overcharges; county staff said they will seek reimbursement from the sending township, per prior agreement.

Operational notes

The treasurer said the office is preparing records for the 2024 audit and will begin work on the 2025 delinquent-tax sale. She noted that township elected treasurer positions remain vacant in some places and that watercraft/tagging and oil-and-gas delinquencies continue to be administrative items the office tracks. The treasurer also described outreach and paperwork processes for refunds and extensions, and that the tag office and treasurer—s office coordinate distributions to townships and cemeteries when officials visit the office.
