KDOT awards up to $1.7 million for Peter Pan Road safety project; county signs acceptance form

County public-works staff told commissioners that one of two applications to the Kansas Department of Transportation’s High Risk Rural Roads program was awarded funding. The Peter Pan Road project — a one-mile segment north of County Road 4600 — received an award of up to $1,700,000, staff said, while the Buckeye Street application was not selected.

Brandon, public-works staff, said the awarded project would continue safety work begun near Oak Street and would likely include widening, ditch reshaping and one bridge widening. Staff said further design work is required; commissioners signed the KDOT Form 1302 to accept the award and allow the county to advance design and contract phases.

Commissioners asked about shoulder treatments and noted final design decisions (gravel shoulder versus sod) remained to be determined. The county’s public-works office will prepare the design and return to the commission for construction authorization after design and cost details are completed.

The commission signed the form at the meeting to move the project forward; staff said all three commissioners and the county clerk signed the acceptance paperwork.

The Buckeye Street application remains eligible for re-submission in future cycles, staff said.
