Caney USD 436 bond election canvassed; commission certifies results

Montgomery County commissioners completed the special board canvass for USD 436 (Caney) bond election and certified the results after review of provisional ballots.
Election officers Stephanie Wilson, Rita Ordelani and Savannah Perry presented the district’s poll totals and reviewed 12 provisional ballots. Using guidance cited in the packet from the Kansas statutes (KSA), the election officers determined nine provisional ballots were valid and three were not accepted; after combining canvass results from Montgomery County and the small portion of the district in Chautauqua County, staff presented totals for certification.
At the time of certification the canvass report recorded 47 “yes” votes and 787 “no” votes across the district as presented to the commission; the election officers placed signature copies of the canvass in the record and the commission certified the return.
Commissioners administered the oath to the special board canvass members and signed the canvass documents as required by statute. County staff said they would file the canvass results per KSA requirements.
The commission’s action was a formal certification of the district canvass; election officers said they would follow statutory duties for recordkeeping and any further reporting.
