Board adopts Section 504/ADA grievance protocol as district policy

The Colchester School District Board of Education approved the second and final reading of the district’s Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) grievance protocol, retitled to “Section 504 and ADA grievance protocol for students and staff.”
Carrie, a district policy presenter, said most of the policy remains as previously presented; the board changed the introductory paragraph to retain local policy intent while aligning the document to district policy formatting. Carrie said the district’s legal counsel advised that if federal law changes, references to federal statutes would need to be reviewed and the district could retain local statements that are stronger than federal language if desired.
During review one board member pointed out a duplicated phrase naming the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights; staff said they would correct that typographical duplication before finalizing the printed policy. The board then approved the policy on a voice vote.
The adopted policy covers nondiscrimination on the basis of disability and describes the district’s grievance process for students and staff who allege disability-based discrimination.
