Chippewa Valley students win district Lehi robotics competitions; long-time coordinator to step down
Summary
Elementary and middle school teams competed in district robotics; Seneca Middle School’s black team won the middle school title and Ojibwe Elementary won the elementary trophy. District coordinator Mike Mallick—15 years with the program—said he will step down.
Mike Mallick, district coordinator for the Lehi robotics program, and coaches recognized student teams and volunteers after district competitions in late February and early March.
Mallick told the board the middle-school competition on Feb. 28 at Dakota High School was “fierce and fun,” and that Seneca Middle School’s black team finished first. He said the elementary competition at Chippewa Valley High School on March 7 produced an Ojibwe Elementary first-place team.
Jen Lewis, coach of the Ojibwe team, said coaches and volunteers make the program possible and praised the students’ perseverance and increasing gender balance: “We’re getting a lot more equality with girls and boys,” she said. Students from winning teams described events such as “Maze,” “Sumo” and “Shootout,” and coaches and board members who judged the events praised student dedication and practice schedules.
Mallick also announced he will step down after 15 years leading Lehi robotics — six of those as district coordinator — but said he plans to continue volunteering when he can. Board members and school staff thanked volunteers, coaches and parents and congratulated students on awards and participation.
