Board hears update on sanitary-district appeals and schedules outreach items

During staff reports at the March 13 Walworth County Board of Adjustment meeting, zoning staff updated the board on two separate administrative appeals filed by a sanitary district and encouraged members to attend an upcoming shoreland landscaping training.
Nick Sigman, zoning staff, told the board the sanitary district had submitted challenges to staff interpretations of the zoning ordinance for two sites — one on property the district owns and another where it holds an easement on private land. "They appealed," Sigman said, and staff and the board had previously upheld the county's interpretation. Sigman said the county is moving to have both appeals dismissed for procedural reasons, including possible issues with timely service; the appeals are in process.
Commissioners asked for the item to be kept on future agendas as court proceedings develop. Anne Seiver, chair, said the county should "keep abreast" of any changes and asked staff to return updates as they become available.
The board also discussed a shoreland landscaping training for contractors and others; commissioners described it as a half-day program (about 8 a.m. to noon) with a nominal $20 fee that includes presentations and handouts. Several members encouraged attendance, noting the sessions provide useful guidance on shoreland setbacks and best practices for contractors who work in shoreland zones.
No formal action was taken on the appeals report; staff will return updates as the legal process continues.
