Wasco County seeks state grant to expand Hunt Park campsites, tables and trees

Wasco County officials asked the Board of Commissioners to approve a state grant application to add fire pits, picnic tables and drought‑tolerant trees at Hunt Park, and the board voted to authorize the application.
The county’s public information officer, Stephanie Crowell, told commissioners that the application to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Local Government Grant Program would fund the Hunt Park Beautification Project. Crowell said, “the funding will help to install 24 fire pits, 24 picnic tables, and plant 40 drought resistant shade trees, as well as placing 20 garbage receptacles and 4 pet waste stations throughout the park.” She said the project budget is $183,828 and the grant requires a 20 percent local match; she added she had discussed the match with the finance director and was assured the funds are available. Crowell also said, “The grant is due on April 1 and we’ve been working with Global Grants to put together a strong application.”
Facilities manager Robert Hughes described options for the campfire pits and said the county is working with a local college and considering a mix of custom and premade pits. He described a roughly 18‑inch‑deep round fire pit design with a cooking grate and said the county may involve students and youth services in building site elements. Hughes also provided details about a volunteer workday to help with arena and fencing upgrades at the park, saying the county rescheduled volunteer days to April 16–18 because ground conditions are wet and that volunteers would help set and bolt panels and assist with hole drilling for posts.
Commissioners moved and seconded a resolution authorizing the county administrative director to apply for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Local Government Grant Program for further development of the campgrounds at Hunt Park and delegating authority to sign the application. The motion passed with unanimous aye votes.
The board did not adopt final design decisions at the meeting; staff said they will continue to refine designs, confirm contractor and volunteer roles and update the commission as the grant application and project planning proceed.
