Columbia County transit director wins approval to refill utility worker position

Columbia County commissioners authorized the transit department to fill an open utility worker position during the April 2 meeting after Transit Director Chris Wheatley described the role’s duties and operational importance.
Wheatley said the position historically handled bus washing, interior cleaning, restroom upkeep at transit facilities and sanitizing high-touch surfaces such as handrails. He told commissioners the vacancy had been open about three weeks and that the department had temporarily redistributed cleaning tasks among staff and drivers; he estimated the role would be 15–20 hours per week depending on needs.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about hours and whether drivers could absorb washing duties; Wheatley said some drivers can perform the tasks but others cannot, and that having a dedicated utility worker ensures cleaners are available to respond to accidents or heavier cleaning needs.
A motion to authorize filling the position was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. County staff said the position is budgeted and would not affect the general fund.
