Orange City honors winter athletes, state qualifiers and Baron Cup hockey champions

The Orange City School District Board of Education recognized winter-season athletes and coaches at its March 17 meeting, honoring individual and team achievements across wrestling, swimming, diving and ice hockey.
Superintendent Dr. Campbell opened the recognition segment and called forward coaches and athletes. Genevieve Duxbury, the girls wrestling coach, said Natalie Martinsic qualified for the state tournament for the second consecutive year and recounted the wrestler’s 30‑13 season record, ‘‘18 falls and 2 tech falls,’’ sectional championship and fourth place at districts. "You're witnessing history," Duxbury said, noting Natalie is Orange High School’s first and only female wrestler and that the OHSA recognizes girls wrestling as a separate sanctioned sport.
Coach Adam Katz reported 10 students qualified for state in swimming and diving (five boys, five girls) and said eight of those athletes will return next year. Katz told the board the boys’ team went undefeated during dual meets and that the boys’ 400‑meter freestyle relay finished seventh at the state meet.
Board members also recognized the ice hockey team for winning the Baron Cup — the third time in school history — and noted the team’s postseason run included an overtime championship victory and a state-tournament appearance. The board called up players and coaches to receive certificates and public thanks.
Ending Board members congratulated students, coaches and families for the season’s accomplishments and noted a celebratory recognition meeting will be scheduled in May with expanded space to honor the full list of student awardees.
