County Public Works staff reported to the Public Facilities Committee that Sands Boat Landing in Port Royal has required repeated maintenance and repairs over the past five years, with roughly $250,000 spent to keep the landing usable.
Jared (Public Works staff) provided the history: in March 2020 the county rented a long-reach excavator (cost of at least $5,000) to perform maintenance at the landing. In May 2022 the county replaced floating docks and performed substantial cleanout at a cost of about $150,000 after sand and debris damaged dock transition plates. A storm this past January caused further damage, and the docks were replaced again at a cost of about $80,000; Jared said roughly $50,000 of that repair was recouped through insurance and the county was unsuccessful in obtaining FEMA funding for the repair.
Jared said Public Works has visited the landing at least twice since January to remove sand and silt with county equipment. He characterized the expense as ongoing: “over the last 5 years, we spent about $250,000 just maintaining, and maintaining the sand and silt to keep that usable,” he told the committee.
Committee members had no further questions after the update. Staff said they will place an updated capital-projects spreadsheet in the committee packet and email a list of all active projects and status updates to committee members; staff also said they will include property addresses when available in the spreadsheet for committee review.
