Gainesville commission adopts three honorary namings, including Robert Karp Roundabout

The Gainesville City Commission adopted three resolutions to give honorary names to local streets and a roundabout, honoring two longtime community figures and a civic activist.
The commission approved a resolution to dual-name Southeast Fourth Place (from Southeast Twelfth Street to Southeast Thirteenth Street) as Cleo Estrada Avenue, recognizing Cleo Estrada’s decades of community service. The commission also adopted a resolution to dual-name Northeast Second Street (from Northeast Sixteenth Avenue to Northeast 23rd Avenue) as Father Roland M. Julian Way, honoring Father Roland M. Julian’s more than 59 years of ministry, his role at St. Patrick Parish, and community leadership. Finally, the commission named the roundabout at South Main Street and Southeast Tenth Avenue the Robert Karp Roundabout in recognition of Karp’s advocacy for active transportation, urban design and LGBTQ and human-rights work.
All three resolutions were presented as separate agenda items. Each passed by roll call with unanimous support among commissioners present; the meeting record notes the Cleo Estrada resolution passed unanimously with Commissioner Duncan Walker absent, the Father Roland M. Julian resolution passed unanimously with Commissioner Decken and Commissioner Walker absent, and the Robert Karp resolution passed unanimously with Commissioner Duncan Walker absent.
Commissioners used the Robert Karp item to offer extended tributes. Mayor Harvey L. Ward Jr called Karp “one of the two or three most decent people I’ve ever known,” and other commissioners and guests recalled Karp’s longtime bicycling and transit advocacy, community organizing and mentorship. The commission noted a group of friends will pay for a monument at the Robert Karp Roundabout and that the city will not bear expense for the monument.
The resolutions take effect immediately upon adoption, and the city manager or designee was authorized to carry out necessary actions to implement the namings.
