Committee approves $16.25 write-off for 2022 Shoreline Jazz Festival rental fee

The Muskegon County Community Development and Strategic Planning Committee voted Feb. 13 to write off $16.25 of a one-day rental fee owed by Highfalutin Music LLC related to the 2022 Shoreline Jazz Festival at Heritage Landing.
“...we were able to get $1,500 of the $3,250 that was owed. So $16.25 units. And, we're asking to write that off, and can absorb that write off within the CVB budget,” Community Development Director Bob Lukens said when presenting the item.
Lukens said the festival initially contracted for two days at Heritage Landing and paid in full; about a week or two before the event the promoter requested an additional day and did not pay for that extra day after attendance was lower than expected. Staff worked with corporate counsel and the festival owner to recover part of the delinquent payment and recommended writing off the remaining $16.25 as absorbable within the CVB budget.
Commissioner Hayes Camp moved the motion; Commissioner Hermann seconded. The committee approved the write-off by voice vote.
Staff noted that established, recurring festivals typically pay and that new festivals are generally asked to start at smaller venues and pay up front to reduce financial exposure.
