Wayland reviews updated technology-use policy; committee asks for clarification on copyright and enforcement
Summary
The committee reviewed a drafted replacement for IJND (Use of Technology Resources); staff recommended edits to modernize acceptable‑use, privacy and staff online conduct language and will return after director of technology answers copyright and enforcement questions.
The School Committee reviewed a draft overhaul of its technology policy April 9 and asked staff to return with clarifications on copyright language and enforcement before posting the draft for public comment.
Committee members described the proposed IJND (Use of Technology Resources) as more comprehensive than existing policy, consolidating elements common in modern school tech policies: acceptable-use that applies on and off campus, staff online-communication expectations, data-privacy protections, device and network security, and guidance on copyright and intellectual property. The packet identified changes such as prohibiting staff from connecting personal devices to the district network (guest network only) and spelled out expected staff behavior online.
Committee members asked for two follow-ups before a public-comment period: a review of the policy language on copyright to avoid overly broad statements that might inhibit permissible educational use, and an operational escalation pathway for suspected violations or cyber incidents so staff know who to notify and what steps will follow. The committee asked that Jen Judkins, the district's director of technology, address those points; staff said they would consult with Jen and return at the next meeting.
Committee members also recommended an accompanying communication plan: an abbreviated summary of key changes for families and staff, and in‑building or online training (for example, phishing-awareness) to accompany any new rules or network changes.
Why it matters: Technology rules shape classroom practice, privacy protections and security posture. Committee members signaled support for updating the policy but sought clearer, actionable language and training steps before formal posting and a public-comment period.
