The Canton School Committee voted on March 27 to accept a $66,000 grant from the 1‑8 Foundation to support the Galvin Middle School’s planned adoption of the OpenSciEd science curriculum.
District staff said the middle school team piloted portions of OpenSciEd and recommended the curriculum after a fall visit to a district using the program. The 1‑8 Foundation award will fund professional development and instructional materials: the plan is a three‑year rollout with two units added each year so that in year three all six grade‑level units will be in place for sixth through eighth grade.
Katherine Stein, the middle‑school instructional coach, and teacher Sarah Donovan joined middle‑school staff on the grant interview team. Superintendent Follin told the committee the grant “was the perfect alignment” of teacher priorities and outside funding.
Why it matters: the grant covers start‑up professional development and materials that district leaders said will reduce up‑front costs for implementing a new science curriculum and accelerate teacher training.
Vote and next steps The committee approved the grant by voice vote; the district will receive the funds and schedule training for the nine science teachers identified for the initial units. A formal program review presentation for science will return to the committee in April with fuller curriculum details.
