The Board of Island County Commissioners voted April 1 to accept the Whidbey News-Times as the county's official legal newspaper, a designation required by state law.
Jennifer Rolle, presenting for the commissioner's office, told the board that the county received two timely bids โ one from the Whidbey News-Times and one from the Stanwood Camano News โ and that the Whidbey News-Times continued to meet the qualifications required under RCW 36.72.075. Rolle said the Whidbey News-Times proposed a rate of $14.05 per legal inch for publishing notices in the News-Times and the South Whidbey Record, a rate that had not changed since 2023. She said the News-Times reported a distribution of about 6,500 "reads" and that Island County spent $97,814.82 on advertisements and legal notices in 2024.
A commissioner moved to award the bid to the Whidbey News-Times and the motion passed on a voice vote without dissent.
Rolle said matters affecting the Camano Island portion of Island County will continue to be published in the Stanwood Camano News in addition to the official county legal newspaper. The board's approval begins the administrative process to finalize the county's official legal publication for the contract period discussed at the meeting.
The presenters and commissioners did not identify any additional conditions attached to the award during the meeting.
