Historical society asks Lawrence County to sign marker application for Village of Superior; commissioners to consult prosecutor

Nicole Cox, president of the local historical society, asked the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners for the county’s signature on a property-permission letter so the society can submit a historical-marker application commemorating the Village of Superior.

Cox told the board the historical society is celebrating its 100th year and has funding, language, and an application ready; the county’s signature is needed because the property currently appears to be under federal stewardship. She said the site contains the remnants of the village, including house foundations and the furnace site tied to local ironmaster Nannie Kelly Wright, and that the Elizabeth Township Trustees will prepare the site if the permission is granted.

Commissioners discussed next steps and asked Dylan Bentley, the acting administrator, to check with the county prosecutor about whether the county can sign the letter given the property's ownership status. The board agreed to attempt a fast follow-up so the historical society can meet the application deadline noted in the meeting as May 1.

Cox said the larger plan is to coordinate the marker with a U.S. Forest Service trails and interpretive-signage project; she asked that the county sign the smaller, marker-specific permission so the society can proceed while the broader project is resolved with the Forest Service.
