Snohomish — District staff recommended on March 26 that the board consider adopting the Carolina Biological edition of the OpenSciEd science curriculum for fourth through eighth grades after a year-long review and classroom pilots.
The recommendation came from Monica (role/title not specified), who said a review beginning in spring 2024 produced two viable curriculum options; the adoption team overwhelmingly chose the Carolina version of OpenSciEd to pilot. Monica told the board the team included elementary and middle school teachers, representation from special education and advanced-program teachers, and administrators, and that the process included teacher and community feedback.
Why it matters: OpenSciEd is a phenomena-based, student-centered approach that emphasizes inquiry, model-building and investigation rather than rote content memorization, staff said. The Carolina Biological “teacher edition” adds teacher guides and durable lab kits that staff said will help classroom implementation.
Teachers who piloted the curriculum described classroom impacts and pacing. Catherine Hensley, a fourth-grade teacher at Seattle Hill Elementary, said students “embraced” the hands-on, inquiry-based units and that the work stretched students’ thinking. Nick Melander, a science teacher at Valley View Middle School, described multi-week units (he cited a bath-bomb unit and others) in which students generated tests and models and then refined those models based on evidence.
Monica summarized implementation notes for the board: the recommendation covers grades 4–8 only (the district is not adopting K–3 materials at this time); the rollout will phase in units (elementary will start smaller); and the district selected the Carolina-published kits and teacher editions for usability and durability. Monica said the Carolina edition preserves fidelity to OpenSciEd while adding printed teacher materials and reusable lab kits.
The presentation was informational; the board did not take a formal adoption vote at the March 26 meeting. Staff said they plan further work on professional development and implementation planning if the board moves forward.
Implementation details and clarifications included: the adoption team composition (5 middle-school teachers, 10 elementary teachers and 3 administrators), pilot feedback from students, parents and teachers, and that pilots typically run one unit (about 4–6 weeks) with subsequent units expected to accelerate with teacher experience.
