District athletic staff described an evaluation of current youth and junior high offerings and said baseball and softball emerged as priorities for expansion. Staff noted some constraints: equipment and uniform costs for baseball in particular, practice space and scheduling (both sports would play in spring), and transportation or practice time for athletes. The packet included a budget estimate for start‑up costs; board members said the estimate was useful but suggested additional items (uniforms, family costs) may not be fully captured.

Assistant principal and activities director Brian Foster and district staff said area schools currently offer a mix of junior‑high and club options; district leaders proposed using school coaches to support junior‑high teams and coordinating schedules to avoid large conflicts with existing youth leagues. Board members and a longtime local league organizer said Sedalia already has several community travel teams and that a school program could complement, not necessarily supplant, community leagues. One board member noted junior‑high sports can provide structure and incentives that support attendance and behavior.

Board members asked staff to return next month with a formal implementation plan and any additional budget details. No vote was taken; the board directed staff to bring the proposal back for action.
