Saratoga 250 commission launches '2 Lights for Tomorrow' luminary campaign

Roberts said the commission, which has been working since 2021, focuses on three goals: promoting public education about the county’s Revolutionary-era history, preserving and engaging with historic sites and infrastructure, and increasing heritage tourism. "I'm here on behalf of the Saratoga 250 commission," Roberts said as she described the campaign and distributed informational bags to supervisors.
The “2 Lights for Tomorrow” campaign, modeled on a Wisconsin initiative, asks municipalities, libraries, businesses and residents to display two lights or luminaries on a designated night in April that marks the anniversary observances tied to Lexington and Concord. Roberts said Saratoga County will place two lanterns at the County municipal building, and luminaries will also be available at the Saratoga County History Center and the Gateway Visitors Center in Schuylerville, the county’s designated “America’s Turning Point” heritage hub.
Roberts described materials available to local governments and libraries, including luminary bags, battery-operated tea lights and flyers for town halls and libraries. She said the commission will offer story time visits to local libraries during the school break week before the April event and will run a social-media contest using the hashtag #Saratoga250 to reward creative or patriotic displays. "We will have these two lanterns here at the municipal building," Roberts said, and encouraged supervisors to distribute luminaries to municipal organizations and libraries.
The county official who introduced the presentation thanked Roberts and the commission for planning events across the anniversary year and urged supervisors to share the materials with local organizations. Roberts asked supervisors to direct any questions to her office or to the county historian’s office listed on the distributed materials.
The initiative is framed as a countywide public-education and heritage-tourism effort; no funding requests or budget amendments tied to this initiative were presented at the March 18 meeting.
