Parents and residents call for traffic study and safety fixes near Glens Falls schools

Several residents told the council they are alarmed by traffic congestion and unsafe conditions at the Glens Falls middle school and high school campus and urged immediate action.
Cassie Deason, identified as a Queensbury resident and parent, described an episode in which gridlock on Grand Avenue formed during school dismissal, with vehicles several lanes wide and cars parked laterally along Sherman Avenue. “It is unacceptable for a walking district,” Deason said, asking the council and school district to convene a joint traffic committee to develop and implement solutions including signage, crossing guards and improved crosswalks.
Council members and staff acknowledged prior work; one council member said the city had previously conducted counts and that staggered dismissal created concentrated flows toward Grand Avenue. Staff and council described earlier action plans that include phased measures such as sidewalk extensions and a potential permanent one‑way on Clayton Avenue; staff said some sidewalk additions require neighbor consent and coordination with Queensbury for portions of Western Avenue.
Council members urged follow-up, and staff offered to share existing action plans and to coordinate with the school district and AGFTC on TIP and grant applications for targeted improvements along school routes.
