Glens Falls Fire Department reports heavy call volume, MOU to help lieutenant reach retirement; crew praised for rescue

The Glens Falls Fire Department reported a busy January and several administrative developments at the Board of Public Safety meeting on Feb. 12.
Deputy Chief reported 328 calls for service in January, an average of about 11 calls per day, and nearly 300 hours of training. He said seven new hires reported in January and three members were sent to the academy the prior week.
The board read a press release announcing that the Glens Falls Common Council approved a memorandum of understanding allowing firefighters to donate sick and vacation time so Lieutenant Hall can reach retirement without a cost to taxpayers. The release thanked the city's human resources director, Judy Villa White, union leadership, attorneys and the council's Labor and Personnel Management Committee chair, Councilman Bob Landry.
Deputy Chief also presented a formal commendation for A Crew for actions on Jan. 15 at 158 Bay Street, where firefighters rescued an unconscious, wheelchair-bound resident from a second-floor unit and contained the fire to its unit of origin. The commendation named Captain Rick Stafford, Lieutenant Tom Ordway, Fire Prevention Officer Lieutenant Aaron Wharf and multiple firefighters for their actions.
The deputy chief asked the board to enter executive session to discuss a personnel matter; the board voted to enter executive session at the end of the meeting. The board accepted the chief's written report by motion.
