Committee hears preliminary plan for American Revolution monument at Thatcher Park, will solicit design proposals

Members of the Old King’s Highway Committee on Jan. 13 heard an update about a proposed American Revolution monument at Thatcher Park (the town playground). Committee member John Stewart reported on a community meeting about possible locations and design concepts.
Stewart said two locations were considered: a spot near the street that he warned would interfere with children’s play, and a more secluded point farther toward the back of the park. Committee members and meeting attendees generally favored the quieter, rear location because it is less likely to obstruct park activities and already has a water spigot for plantings. Stewart said benches were suggested; he recommended two benches and an obelisk‑style granite monument large enough to list names.
No formal decision was requested or made by the Old King’s Highway Committee at the Jan. 13 meeting. Town staff told the committee they will issue requests for proposals for design and fabrication and will return with proposals and public meetings for committee input as designs progress.
Committee members said they prefer to revisit locational recommendations when more members are present. The committee also noted it would welcome design proposals that respect the park setting and historic context.
The committee did not vote and will consider the matter at a future meeting; the next meeting date announced by staff is Jan. 27, 2025.
