Conservation commission to convene Mattaqueese utilization discussion; receives conditional funding outlook for signage

YARMOUTH, Mass. — At the end of its Jan. 16 meeting the Yarmouth Conservation Commission discussed scheduling and small‑scale funding matters related to open‑space planning and public outreach.

The commission said its Open Space team — described by members as a joint group of the Conservation Commission, the Open Space Committee and a representative from the Water Department — will hold a preliminary Mattaqueese Utilization Committee meeting in late February to develop conservation‑oriented components for the broader Mattaqueese utilization process. The commission chair said the open‑space subgroup will not produce "grandiose plans" but will focus on maintenance, conservation, restoration and regulatory limits the town must observe in any reuse or development process. The chair said the preliminary meeting will be brief and used to collect ideas on areas to conserve and components to include in other projects.

Commissioners also reported a conditional, positive review from the CEDC tourism revenue public improvements fund for roughly $3,000 to pay for conservation signage where dumping and cutting have been problems, plus interpretive signage and benches at Chase Brook Park. The chair said he is unsure when the fund will vote formally but that initial feedback from the fund was favorable.

Separately, commission members noted problems with the town's online calendar: their meeting was not listed on an events page, which one commissioner suggested contributed to a low in‑person turnout. Staff confirmed the calendar experienced issues and said meeting postings should be corrected going forward.

The commission adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
