The Yarmouth Select Board voted Tuesday to send a letter of support to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation urging the agency to study and recommend safety upgrades at the unlit crosswalk that serves Thatcher Hall and the town common.
Town planner Kathy (Town Planner) and volunteer Susan Moller (organizer) provided background showing the crosswalk serves thousands of pedestrians attending events at Thatcher Hall and on the common. The memo in the packet cited counts of 400 people at Halloween trick-or-treat and 1,000 at the annual stroll as examples of heavy pedestrian use; commenters said the crosswalk lacks lighting and warning signage and ends at a downhill slope where pedestrians enter the roadway.
Board members discussed that the crosswalk sits on a state highway (Route 6A) and that MassDOT’s engineering study process would produce design recommendations — including options such as flashing beacons or other treatments used elsewhere on the Cape. The board agreed the town should send a letter of support to MassDOT and asked staff to obtain a copy of the petitioner’s letter to include when the board’s letter is submitted.
A motion to send a letter of support passed unanimously by voice vote.
