Commissioners adopt Tom Green County transportation plan to support future grant applications

Tom Green County Commissioners on April 15 adopted a countywide transportation plan designed to guide future road, rail and infrastructure projects and to improve the county’s competitiveness for federal and regional grant funding.

Commissioner Nanny, who presented the document, said the plan sets a broad vision rather than detailed engineering specifications and will be useful when applying for grants. “It’s just a broad overview, but it is something we need to have on record as we go out for grants,” Nanny said, citing Mineral Wells Crossing and anticipated roadway connections tied to interstate corridors and a reactivated rail line.

County staff and a representative from the Council of Governments (COG) described ongoing efforts to secure regional transportation planning funds. The COG has sought federal planning dollars and, according to the presentation, a successful regional submission could open opportunities for “professional directed spending” and applications for capital projects estimated during discussion as potentially involving millions of dollars per year.

Commissioners credited Michelle Ferguson with assisting in preparing the document and discussed the plan’s role in shaping subdivision overlays and right-of-way planning as new roadways are built.

The court moved, seconded and the motion carried by voice vote. No roll-call tallies were recorded in the meeting minutes.

Ending: With the plan adopted, county officials said they will use it to pursue grant funding and to coordinate with regional partners on roadway and rail-related projects.
