Yarmouth housing committee narrows 26 ideas into themed options, sets homework and next steps

The Town of Yarmouth Community Housing Committee on Feb. 24 grouped 26 public ideas for redeveloping a roughly 70-acre municipal parcel into a shorter list of themes — and set homework for staff and committee members before a final meeting in March.

Consultants presented a consolidated set of candidate approaches that the committee and the Affordable Housing Trust could use to craft three alternatives (and later a single recommended scenario) for the larger MUC (multi-use committee) process. The discussion emphasized housing variety, veterans-supportive options, senior-friendly units, partial reuse of the existing school building and protection of undisturbed land, while repeatedly flagging wastewater infrastructure as a critical constraint.

Why it matters: the parcel is one of the town’s larger developable sites and could accommodate multiple housing types, community uses and recreation. Choices now will shape applications for state infrastructure and housing grants, possible partnerships with the Yarmouth Housing Authority and the terms of future requests for proposals (RFPs).
